John Tobias Biography and Career

John Tobias is a comic book artist, graphic designer, video game designer, and writer from the United States. Tobias is most known for co-creating the Mortal Kombat series with Ed Boon after pitching his fighting game concept to him. Career

Prior to the triumph of Mortal Kombat in 1992, he worked on the original arcade version of Smash TV (1990). Tobias designed the storyline, ideas, and settings for the first Mortal Kombat game, including the Outworld and Netherrealm.

From the first games in the series through Mortal Kombat 4, he was in charge of designing the complete character lineup (1997). Kano, Kitana, Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, and Goro are among the series’ most popular characters.

Tobias, along with other key Midway employees such as Dave Michicich and Josh Tsui, departed the company in 1999 and founded Studio Gigante in 2000. The first game Studio Gigante made was Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus, released by Microsoft Game Studios in 2003, followed by WWE WrestleMania 21 in 2005. John Tobias worked as a consultant in the games industry until September 2012, when he joined the social games firm Zynga. Studio Gigante suspended operations in 2005.

John Tobias is not mentioned in the commentary or descriptions in the “making of” films for Deadly Alliance and Deception, despite being one of the “four individuals who made” the original Mortal Kombat.

However, he can be seen in the Mortal Kombat 3 commentaries in the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 collection. Tobias illustrated a pack-in comic for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe special editions in 2008. Tobias was interviewed in-depth about Mortal Kombat and the controversies surrounding its release in episode 5 of the 2020 Netflix documentary miniseries High Score. Boon posted that they are both Hispanic as part of Hispanic Heritage Month 2021.

Before joining Midway Games, he worked as an artist for The Real Ghostbusters comic book series.
