History of this Temple
Pawapuri Jal Mandir was built by King Nandivdhan, the elder brother of Lord Mahavira. About 2600 years ago, Pawapuri was a part of the Magadha Empire in ancient times. Which was called Madhyam Vapa or Apappuri. Jinprabha Suri has described its ancient name as Apapa in his book Vividh Tirtha Kalpa Rup. Ajatashatru, the son of Magadha ruler Bimbisara, was a follower of Jainism and a contemporary of Lord Mahavira.
During the reign of Ajatashatru, the Rajkiya Aushadhalaya was constructed at Pawapuri. When Lord Mahavir came to Pawapuri. It is believed that Lord Mahavir attained salvation here. The name Jal Mandir itself suggests that the temple will be situated in the middle of water bodies filled with blooming lotuses. The temple is constructed in the shape of a plane and a stone bridge about 600 feet long has been built from the banks of the reservoir to the temple.
