Tapovan Mandir Dehradun – Guide

Tapovan Mandir also known as “Rudreshwar Shiva Temple” is situated in the forest of Dehradun. Tapovan is a Sanskrit word made up of two root words- ‘Tapasya’ meaning austerity or austerity and ‘Vana’ meaning forest or jungle. That’s why Tapovan literally suggests forest for meditation. Hidden near Raipur, Tapovan Temple is the place where Guru Dronacharya did severe penance.

On entering inside, one sees a huge idol of Lord Shiva in the temple. A Shivling is also installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the Dehradun Tapovan Mandir. Stone effigies of other Hindu deities like Lord Hanuman, Goddess Durga, Kali etc. Can also be seen here.

This is the place where Dronacharya did his penance. In the epic Mahabharata, Dronacharya was the preceptor of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Tapovan is a famous site for meditation and other spiritual activities. Yoga courses are also held in the ashram from time to time. The surrounding greenery and the sound of the river make the atmosphere very soothing.
