Jyotiba sits on a horse, and so it is possible that he represents the sun god in many symbolic ways. The image faces south, towards the Mahalakshmi Temple, in Kolhapur as a protective gesture towards her.
It is believed that Kedarnath from the north was invited by Goddess Mahalakshmi to overcome the demons who were troubling the people in the region. Since then the Kedarnath Shivling is associated with Jyotiba, and in the Jyotiba temple Shiva and the Sun God have merged into one God.
