Shri Geeta Bhavan Mandir Birmingham – Guide
The Shri Geeta Bhavan Mandir is located on the border of the Handsworth and Lozells districts of Birmingham. It is the first Hindu temple in the Midlands of England, opened in 1969 in a previous church. The temple building was originally St. George’s Presbyterian Church, designed by JP Osborne. The church was established around 1896. However, it was renovated as a temple and reopened in 1969.
History of this Temple
The most difficult task for immigrants from India was to find a place of worship in England. Since most of the citizens belong to the Christian community, the Hindu people were unable to find a comfortable place of worship. The scenario was similar for every part of Britain. People started organizing meetings in small groups at each other’s homes. They used to conduct all religious and spiritual performances in the same way.
As the months passed, the community began to grow to participate in the worship and rituals. Eventually, they started looking for a big place where they could perform all the pujas and rituals properly. The search ended when the church was found. People fought hard to get all the legal permission for the construction of the Shri Geeta Bhavan Mandir in Birmingham.
He also started collecting donations from neighboring Hindu families for the renovation of the church. The work of building a temple in place of the church started within a few months. Finally, in 1969, the construction of Shri Geeta Bhavan Mandir in Birmingham came to an end.
