Kankali Mandir Mathura – Guide

Goddess Kankali Devi Mandir is in the city of Mathura. This temple is the second holiest place after Krishna Janmabhoomi. It is situated on Bhuteshwar road in Mathura city. The temple stands on a boulder of rock called Kanak Tila. Kankali Devi is one of the many forms of Goddess Shakti. She is depicted with 8 hands and is seated on a lion.

History of this Temple

According to legend, the people of Mathura faced many problems due to the tyranny of their ruler, King Kansa. Kansa deposed his own father and put him on the throne. He was the brother of Devaki, the mother of Krishna. A divine prophecy predicted that Kansa would die at the hands of Devaki’s eighth child.

Kansha was shocked to see a girl child instead of a boy but still decided to kill her. When Kansa tried to kill the infant by hurling it against a rock, it slipped out of his hands and flew away. She also announced that Kansa would soon be killed as predicted. Then she disappeared. Since then this place came to be known as Kansa Kali or Kankali.
