Tapasthali Jain Mandir – Guide
Shri Digambar Jain Temple or Tapasthali Jain Mandir is a Jain pilgrimage centre in Kunthalgiri in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This is a Siddha Kshetra i.e. the place of salvation. The temple is dedicated to the history of two ascetic saints, Shri Kul Bhushan and Desh Bhushan. The temple has two ancient foot images of Kul Bhushan and Desh Bhushan. Later the Kul Bhushan Desh Bhushan temple was built and the images of the feet were installed in VS 1932.
History of this Temple
According to history two ascetic sages, Shri Kul Bhushan and Desh Bhushan attained Nirvana at Kunthalgiri during the time of Lord Unisuvrata, the 20th Tirthankara and Rama-Lakshmana. It is the only holy place in South India with such a legend. The two sages were earlier princes of a kingdom. However, he wanted to become a monk.
Thus he renounced his empire and all other luxuries and became an ascetic saint. Once during their stay in Kunthalgiri, Lord Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sita came to this place during their 14 years of exile. They heard uproar and many terrible sounds. After investigation he came to know that the deities of heaven were troubling Shri Kul Bhushan and Desh Bhushan.
Thus, Rama accompanied Lakshmana to his aid and freed him from his troubles. The ascetic sages obtained Kevalgyan i.e. supernatural knowledge and also salvation from there.
