Dongargarh is a city and a municipality in Rajnandgaon district in the state of Chhattisgarh, India and the site of the Bamleshwari Temple. The temple of Maa Bamleshwari Devi situated on top of a hill at an altitude of 1600 feet is the main attraction and pilgrimage place of Dongargarh. Many legends are also associated with this temple, which compels the devotees to come here. About half a kilometer from this temple, another famous temple is situated, which is known as Chhota Bamleshwari.

History of this Temple

The history of Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple is very old and unclear but according to the legend associated with the temple, it is believed that Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple was built by King Vikramaditya of Ujjain about 2000 years ago. A popular history is associated with this temple which has further increased the unwavering faith of the Goddess in the minds of the devotees.

It is believed that around 2200 years ago, a local king, Raja Virasena was childless and on the suggestion of his royal priests, he worshiped the deities and within a year, the queen gave birth to a son, whom they named Madanasen. Raja Veersen considered it a blessing of Lord Shiva and Parvati and got a temple constructed here which today we know as Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple.

Pragya Giri

It is a hill range and is considered to be one of the best places to visit in Chhattisgarh. Here, one can appreciate the idol of Lord Gautam Buddha. You have to climb 225 steps which will take you to the mountain. This place was constructed around 1998.
