Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple – Guide

Information related to the history of Gomateshwara Temple, also known as Bahubali Temple, is told by historians. Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple is a major Jain religious place associated with Karnataka located in Shravanabelagola city of the state Karnataka.

History of this Temple

Historians tell about the information related to history that Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple was built during 982 or 983 AD. There are about 43 idols of Jain Tirthankaras in the entire temple complex. Apart from all this, about 17 meters tall statues of Lord Bahubali have been made here, which is one of the tallest statues in the world.

This statue of Lord Bahubali has been carved in a very beautiful way in the Gomateshwar temple complex. Kannada inscriptions can also be seen under the statue of Lord Bahubali. There is also a large pillared mandap in this temple complex. About 43 idols of Jain Tirthankaras can be seen in these pavilions.

Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple is opened and closed twice daily. This temple remains open from 6:00 am to 11:30 am and again from 3:30 am to 6:30 am. You can visit here between this time.

Places to visit near this Temple

Chandragupta Basadi

This 12th century monument was originally built by King Ashoka in memory of the brave king Chandragupta Maurya. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Shravanabelagola because of its enchanting architectural ideas similar to the Chola type.

Gomateshwar statue

After climbing 600 steps to the Vindhyagiri hill, you will come face to face with the much-awaited tallest monolithic statue of Baahubali. It seems that the eyes of the 58 feet statue are wide open and there is no such emotional attachment on its face.

Chandragiri hills

The Chandragiri hills are of utmost importance in Shravanabelagola. It is not only home to several basadis but also provides a panoramic view of the whole of Kathmandu. It has been named as one of the best places to visit around Shravanabelagola as it connects Hindu, Buddhist and Jain places of worship.

By Air- The nearest airport from Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple is Mysore Airport which is at a distance of about 83 kms from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Train- The nearest railway station from Gomateshwara Bahubali Temple is Hasan railway station which is at a distance of about few kms from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Road- Roads to this temple are well connected with the other cities of the country so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or by any public buses or taxi from any part of the country.
