Today, let’s delve into the romantic world of Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Let me tell you, he was a casanova for real.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau grew old and weak over the years but never lost his charm. He was still classy and handsome in his 80s and still had that glint in his eye that could make hearts skip a beat. But maybe what attracted the most people’s notice was Pierre Trudeau’s profusion of relationships despite his senior age.
Although some people might think that the behaviour of Pierre is scandalous or unfit for an elderly man, surprisingly he saw it as just another expression of his joie de vivre. It was impossible to deny Mr. Trudeau’s appeal, especially to the opposite sex. With his effortless charisma, women were attracted to him like moths to a flame. He appeared to be much more at ease around women than with men, especially those who were young, attractive, left-wing, a bit flaky and had a certain bohemian flare.
Just Watch Me, John English’s excellent new biography of the former prime minister, is the most thorough account we are going to have of Mr. Trudeau’s love life. Unfortunately, some women would only speak to him informally. Ms. Wente was still unable to determine whether Mr Pierre had actually slept with Barbra Streisand only until she asked Mr. English.
“Did he really sleep with Barbra Streisand?” Wente asked Mr. English.
“The evidence is overwhelming that he did,” he said.
Other women were more than happy to blab. They include Liona Boyd (the blond-bombshell classical guitarist), Margot Kidder (Superman’s girlfriend), Gale Zoë Garnett (who wrote We’ll Sing in the Sunshine ) and Kim Cattrall ( Sex and the City ).
He often invited two girlfriends to the same event. His ambassador to Washington, Allan Gotlieb, reported that Mr. Trudeau had three girlfriends at one supper he gave for him. Even though Margaret (from whom he was legally separated) was still living there upstairs at 24 Sussex, he continued downstairs.

“He was so incredibly sexy,” said Ms. Cattrall, who ought to know. “He was very soft-spoken, incredibly smart, sensitive.”
Even while he flaunted his love life in public, he made all of his girlfriend’s vows to complete confidentiality.
Now, let’s tell you something bizarre. Margaret, the then-wife of Pierre Trudeau was no stranger to his many love affairs. It was an open secret that his romantic interests extended far beyond his marriage, that he had dallied with many women over the years. And yet, despite this knowledge, his wife remained stoic, unmoved by the rumours and whispers that surrounded her.
One night, after Ms. Boyd had performed at a reception at Rideau Hall, his then-separated wife, Margaret, remarked, “So you had a mistress play.”
“Not one, but two,” he shot back.
Once, Margaret came across a pile of photographs of women in his desk drawer. Ms. Streisand’s picture was on top. “Are you rating us?” she asked. “Maybe,” he said.
To tell you more, only Margaret Thatcher was the one woman Mr Trudeau was unable to seduce. She despised him, especially when Ms. Kidder encouraged him to start his own peace effort.
This is very obvious for Margaret Trudeau to grow to loathe him, for his love affairs brought her shame to the family. Mr. Trudeau remained something of a ladies’ man, something of an enigma, elusive and inscrutable.
