Varanasi Kal Bhairav Mandir is a Hindu temple located in Uttar Pradesh, India. This temple is the oldest temple in Varanasi which is completely dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. Kaal means death and time. It is said that Lord Shiva used to take this form only when someone had to be killed. Varanasi is also called Kashi. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there is a silver idol of Kaal Bhairav, which is Bhairav’s vehicle dog, but is resting.

History of this Temple

The Varanasi Kal Bhairav Mandir was built in the 17th century. The older temple is believed to have been destroyed by the Islamist conquest of northern India, and rebuilt in the 17th century. It is believed that Kaal Bhairav ​​was appointed Kotwal of Kashi by Lord Shiva, therefore, to protect the Pind of Mata Sati, a part of Mata Sati’s body fell in Kashi in the form of a pind, which is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Mata. The place where the body part fell is known as Vishalakshi Temple.
