In the past, Bogota was the heartland of the drug mafia. Drug trafficking has long been a major problem in the city, with armed gangs and criminal organizations operating in its streets and neighbourhoods. The drug trade has been a major source of violence and insecurity in Colombia, as well as a major cause of poverty.

However, in recent years, Bogota has seen a remarkable transformation and is now a bustling and prosperous city. Thanks to the efforts of the Colombian government and its people, the city has made great progress in tackling the drug problem and improving security.

The government has implemented a variety of measures to combat drug trafficking, including increased police and military presence in high-crime areas, increased border security, and increased efforts to tackle corruption and money laundering.

Bogota is situated in a prime spot in the Americas. It provides a progressive, cutting-edge platform, vendors with excellent standards, economical prices, numerous tourist attractions, as well as possibilities for economic, cultural and social exchange and learning.

One of the examples is the transition of Bogota to a destination for business tourism. The Bogota Convention Bureau, with the support of its allies, captured 22 events or groups of congresses, conferences and incentive trips in 2022.

These events are expected to have an average duration of 3.11 days and bring in an estimated economic revenue of USD 5,492,750, 9,679 attendees and 21,971 projected hotel nights. Some of these events are projected to take place between 2023 and 2027.

Invest in Bogota has spearheaded a joint effort to attract and manage Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) in the City Region. This type of tourism is seen as an opportunity for the Colombian capital and its metropolitan area to recover from the pandemic, and is supported by two strategies: innovation, technology, social inclusion, sustainability and accessibility; and consolidating the MICE segment.

This is backed by Bogota’s offer of 80 venues, several hotel chains, service providers with high-quality standards and exceptional human talent. This has enabled the city to host major events such as Smart City Expo Bogota, the International Book Fair, the V edition of the Para-pan American Youth Games, Adventure Nex, the World Forum of Cities and Territories of Peace and the Women Deliver Regional Event.

Hence, the transformation of Bogota from a city dominated by drug gangs to a prosperous metropolis is an example of how, with the right policies and commitment, a city can overcome its challenges and emerge stronger and more prosperous.
