Argentina’s decision to join the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) has the potential to be a significant step towards creating a unified Latin America.
UNASUR is a regional bloc composed of a few South American countries, with the goal of promoting regional integration, political dialogue, and economic cooperation. Argentina’s participation in this bloc has the potential to further these goals and help create a more unified and prosperous Latin America.
Argentina recently announced that it will rejoin the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a regional intergovernmental body it left in 2019 during President Mauricio Macri’s administration.
President Alberto Fernandez made the announcement during a meeting at the Casa Rosada, or President’s Office, with members of the Puebla Group, a progressive political and academic forum, and the Latin American Council for Justice and Democracy (CLAJUD).
UNASUR was set up in 2008 amid the pink tide when the region pivoted to the left politically, by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and at its height included 12 Latin American nations.
When the region later shifted to the right politically, however, a number of right-wing governments formed the Lima Group in 2017. Afterwards, a number of countries withdrew from UNASUR and joined the Forum for the Progress and Development of South America (PROSUR), another multilateral bloc focusing on economic and social partnerships.

Of late there has been a renewed vigour among South American nations to revive the multilateral organisation.
The idea of a unified Latin America is rooted in a desire to overcome the historical divisions that have long defined the region. For centuries, Latin America has been marked by colonialism, imperialism, and exploitation, as foreign powers sought to extract resources and wealth from the region without regard for the well-being of its people. This legacy has left deep scars, including economic inequality, political instability, and cultural fragmentation.
In recent decades, there has been a growing movement to overcome these divisions and create a more unified Latin America. This movement has been fueled by a variety of factors, including the rise of left-wing governments across the region, the growing influence of indigenous and Afro-Latino movements, and the increasing economic and political power of the region as a whole.
UNASUR is one of the key institutions driving this movement. Since its formation, the organization has made significant progress in promoting political and economic integration among its member states. It has established a common currency, the Sucre, and has taken steps to coordinate economic policies, promote regional trade, and enhance social protections for marginalized groups. It has also played a key role in mediating regional conflicts, including the recent crisis in Venezuela.

With Argentina’s membership, UNASUR now includes all of the major countries in South America, which could help to strengthen its position as a key player in the region.
The potential benefit of Argentina’s membership in UNASUR is the opportunity for increased political dialogue and cooperation. The region has long been characterized by political instability and polarization, with countries often pursuing their own agendas to the detriment of regional unity. UNASUR offers a platform for South American countries to engage in constructive dialogue on issues such as democracy, human rights, and regional security. By working together to address these challenges, UNASUR can help create a more stable and peaceful region.
Perhaps most importantly, Argentina’s participation in UNASUR can help create a more unified and cohesive Latin America. While the region shares a common history, language, and culture, it has long been divided by economic disparities, political rivalries, and historical grievances. By working together through UNASUR, South American countries can build stronger ties and overcome these divisions, creating a sense of regional identity and pride that can help propel the region forward.
Of course, there are challenges to creating a unified Latin America, and Argentina’s membership in UNASUR is just one step in this process. However, by working together through regional blocs such as UNASUR, South American countries can begin to overcome the historical divisions that have long plagued the region. Through increased integration, political dialogue, and regional cooperation, they can create a more stable, prosperous, and unified Latin America that can stand up to global challenges and realize its full potential.
