Pandharpur Vitthal Mandir – Guide

Pandharpur Vitthal Mandir is dedicated to Lord Krishna and his consort Rukmini named Vitthal Rukmini Temple is a famous pilgrimage centre in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. This village situated on the banks of Bhima river is located in Solapur district. This temple in this village has beautiful black coloured idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini. Lord Krishna is worshiped in the form of Vithoba in this temple.

History of this Temple

Pandharpur Vitthal Mandir pilgrimage was established in the 11th century. The main temple was built by the Yadava rulers of Devagiri in the 12th century. The city is also the land of Marathi poet-saints dedicated to the Bhakti sect. The almost 1000 years old Palkhi tradition was started by some famous saints of Maharashtra. His followers are called Varkaris who kept this practice alive. This temple has been built as a memorial to Bhaktaraj Pundalik. A record of 1117 AD also proves that the devotees of Varkari Granth under the Bhagavata sect had collected enough money for the worship of Vitthaldev.

Pandharpur Vitthal Mandir opens from 4:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the morning and from 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM in the evening/night. Morning aarti is performed at 6:30 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 11:30 PM in the evening.

Places to visit near this Temple

Sand of Narad

Chandrabhaga Tirtha, Somtirtha etc. Are situated on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river. There are many temples here too. This place is called the sand of Narad. The main temple here is of Shri Naradji. There are ten Shivlings at one place here. Apart from this, there is a footprint of God on a platform. Which is called Vishnu Pad.

Gaurishankar Mandir

On the way from Pandharpur to Shingnapur, there is a temple of Gaurishankar half a mile away from the road. It has a very beautiful idol of Ardhanarishwar. It is said that when someone cut the thumb of the idol, blood came out from there. The bone is still visible at the cut site.

Vishnupad Temple

Vishnupad temple is situated in the centre of Chandrabhaga river. The temple is made entirely of stones and is supported by 16 strong pillars. The main attraction of this temple for the visitors are the footprints of Lord Krishna.
