Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple – Guide

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the city of Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, situated on the west bank of the holy river Ganga, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of the sacred Shiva temples in India. The main deity of the temple is known as Vishwanath or Vishweshwar. This is a very old and a grand temple, which is famous all over the world.

History of this Temple

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple has been mentioned in ancient scripts. The temple is believed to have been destroyed by several invaders in 2nd AD which was later rebuilt by a Gujarati merchant. The temple was destroyed during the reign of Akbar in the 15th and 16th centuries. Then Raja Man Singh rebuilt the temple. The temple was destroyed by Aurangzeb in the 17th century and a mosque was built. The remains of an ancient temple can be seen just behind the mosque. The present structure was built in 1780 by Ahilya Bai Holkar, the Maratha ruler of Indore, at a nearby site. Since 1983 the temple is managed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is known as one of the most important places of worship in Hinduism. Inside the Kashi Vishwanath temple is the Jyotirlinga of Shiva, Vishweshwar or Vishwanath. Vishweshwar Jyotirlinga has a very special and unique significance in the spiritual history of India. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is also known as the “Golden Temple or Temple of Gold”. There are golden domes on top of the temple. The gold for this temple was donated by Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab.

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Timings

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple opens at 2:30 AM in the morning and close at 11:00 PM in the Night. Mangala Aarti is performed at 3.00 – 4.00 AM in the Morning. Bhog Aarti is performed at 11.15 to 12.20 in the afternoon. Sandhya Aarti is performed at 7.00 to 8.15 PM in the Evening. Shringar Aarti is performed at 9.00 to 10.15 PM in the Night and Shayan Aarti is performed at 10.30-11.00 PM in the night.

By Train- The nearest railway station from Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is Varanasi Junction railway station which is at a distance of 6 km away from this temple and Varanasi city railway station is 2 km away from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Road- Roads to this temple are well connected with the other cities of the country so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or by any public buses or taxi from any part of the country.
