Pandharpur Vithoba Temple – Guide

Pandharpur Vithoba Temple is located in the Solapur district of Maharashtra on the banks of the Chandrabhaga and Bhima rivers. Here Lord Vitthal which is known as the incarnation of Lord Krishna is seated. The city celebrates festivals four times a year in honour of ‘Vithoba’, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his wife ‘Rukmini’. The main temple was built by the Yadava rulers of Devagiri in the 12th century. There is a very historical legend of this temple. Once Lord Krishna came to visit a devotee Pundalik.

History of this Temple

Pandharpur Vithoba Temple pilgrimage was established in the 11th century. Pandharpur is a religious site visited by thousands of Hindu pilgrims throughout the year. The Vijayanagara king is said to have taken the idol of Krishnadeva Vithoba to his kingdom, but it was then taken back to Pandharpur by a Maharashtrian devotee. A record of 1117 AD also proves that the devotees of Varkari Granth under the Bhagavata sect had collected enough money for the worship of Vitthaldev. Ramdev Rai Jadhav was the president of this circle.
