Maa Kamakhya or Kameshwari is called the goddess of desire. The temple of Maa Kamakhya Devi is located at a distance of eight kilometers from Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Maa Kamakhya Devalaya is considered to be the holiest and oldest of the 51 Shaktipeeths on earth.

It is the centrepiece of the Tantric Shaktism cult widely practiced in India. It is believed that this temple is more famous because of the Rajaswala of the Goddess. Blood is released from the vagina made in the form of a rock in the temple, which is the main reason for the popularity of this temple.

Story of Guwahati Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple

Guwahati Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple was built during the medieval period. Koch Raja Biswa Singh got the temple rebuilt in 1553-54. Later Kalapahad, a Muslim invader of Gaur destroyed the temple. Thereafter the great Koch Raja Naranarayan, the successor of Raja Biswa Singha, along with his brother Chilarai, inspected the place and found it in complete ruins. Narayan renovated the temple in 1565 and gave royal patronage to the temple.

In the beginning of the 17th century, the Ahoms built Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple with various types of stones, which is evidenced by the inscriptions and copper plates of the temple. Due to an earthquake in 1897 AD, the main temple was badly damaged. The temple was repaired several times. The temple received royal patronage from various kings.

Guwahati Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple opens from 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM in the morning and from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 6:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 7:30 PM in the evening.
