Garhwal Badrinath Temple – Guide

Badrinath Temple or Badrinarayan Temple is a major Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located on the Garhwal hill in Uttarakhand, near the Alaknanda River. The temple is a major part of the Char Dham and Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage, surrounded by the Himalayas at an altitude of 10,279 feet. The black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in this temple established by Adi Shankaracharya is 1 meter tall, which is believed to be one of the 8 self-manifested idols of Vishnu.

History of this Temple

According to belief Garhwal Badrinath Temple was originally established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 9th century. It is said that he discovered an idol of Lord Badrinath in the river Alaknanda and enshrined it near Tapt Kund. He also drove out the Buddhists living in the region. In the 16th century, the king of Garhwal shifted the idol to the present temple. The temple was later expanded by the kings of Garhwal in the 17th century. The temple was destroyed by a major earthquake in 1803 and was later rebuilt by the Raja of Jaipur.

Before going to the temple, devotees visit the natural hot spring, Tapt Kund which is located near the temple. Travelers take a dip in this holy and natural hot water, which is considered medicinally important. Here a fair held in the month of August at Mata Murti Temple.
