Congratulations Canada, you‘ve done it! After months of lobbying, your kids can now freely consume cocaine and other drugs without fear of criminalization or stigma.

Yes, that‘s right Canada has finally taken the plunge into the world of drug decriminalization, granting an exemption to its citizens under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Toronto updated its 14monthold decriminalization request to the federal government, clarifying it wants a Health Canada exemption to cover young people as well as adults, and all drugs for personal use. Toronto wants the federal agency to go further than the exemption it recently granted to British Columbia under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The Toronto Board of Health instructed the Medical Officer of Health to work with Health Canada to start the decriminalisation process for restricted substance and drug possession for personal use in the City of Toronto in 2021. Decriminalization has the potential to significantly improve the health and wellbeing of all Torontonians, as stated in the initial submission to Health Canada on January 4, 2022.

The goal of decriminalisation is to reduce the mental, physical, and social harms associated with criminalising people for possessing drugs for their own use.
