Golden Temple Amritsar Tour Guide
The Golden Temple of Amritsar is one of the famous pilgrimage sites of Sikhism. The upper garland of this temple is made of 400 kg gold, hence this temple was named Golden Temple. Very few people know but this temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib. It is a Gurudwara of Sikhs, but the addition of the word temple is a symbol of the fact that every religion is considered equal in India. The doors built around this temple invite people of all religions to come here.
History of this Temple
The foundation of the Gurdwara was laid in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru Ramdas in 500 bighas. Amritsar means tank of nectar. The fifth Sikh Guru Guru Arjan Dev Ji built the Harmandir Sahib i.e. the Golden Temple in the middle of this holy lake and tank and established the Adi Granth, the holy book of Sikhism, here.
Guru Arjun Das started its construction in 1581. This lake was kept dry and empty during construction. It took a full 8 years to complete the first version of Harmandir Sahib. This temple was completely completed in 1604. Although the Golden Temple was destroyed several times, it was rebuilt by Maharaja Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in the 17th century. The walls of this marble temple are carved with gold leaves, which look very beautiful.
