Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple – Guide
Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. It has also been known as Sri Devaraja Swami Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshiped as Athi Varadaraja or Varadaraja Swami. This is probably the only place in the whole world where the presiding deity of the temple is worshiped once in 40 years as only once in 40 years the idol of Lord Varadaraja Swami comes out of the holy Anant Sarovar located in the temple premises.
History of this Temple
Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple was built by the Great Chola rulers during the 11th century and was subsequently renovated by successive Hindu kings. The two sons of Dharmakarta, the chief priest of the temple, took out the wooden idol from the lake and installed it in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, but after staying in the sanctum sanctorum for 48 days, the idol again went back to the lake. From that day itself it was decided that the idol would be taken out once in 40 years. It is believed that since in the absence of the main idol, a new stone idol was consecrated with complete rituals.
The idol came out of the lake in 2019 in the 21st century. Then 48 days of Vardar festival was celebrated. The festival which started from 1st July went on till 9th August. Earlier in 1979 the idol of Sri Varadaraja came out of Anant Sarovar. Now in the coming year 2059, again the idol of God will come out of the lake, then Vardar festival will be organized.
