Brihadeeswarar Mandir – Guide

The Brihadeeswarar Mandir is an ancient Hindu temple located in Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India. This temple has been built in such a way that it stands without any foundation. More than 130000 tonnes of granite was used for the construction of this temple. Brihadeeswarar Temple is one of the major religious places of Hinduism mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva.

History of this Temple

The Brihadeeswarar Mandir was built by the Chola dynasty. This Videshwar temple was built during 1010 AD by the Chola dynasty. The temple has an idol of Lord Shiva in a dancing posture known as Nataraja. The Brihadeeswarar Temple was built by the ruler of the Chola dynasty, Maharaja Rajaraja I, during 1000 to 1009 AD. It took about 5 years to build this temple, after whom this temple was named Rajarajeshwar Temple.

Brihadeeswarar Mandir Timings

Brihadeeswarar Mandir opens from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM in the morning and From 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 6:30 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 7:00 PM in the evening.

The historic Vijayanagara Fort of Thanjavur is located at a distance of about 2 km from the Brihadeeswarar Temple. The credit for the construction of this fort goes to the Nayaks while the interior structure of the fort was taken over by the Maratha rulers during 1550 AD.

Thanjavur’s famous sightseeing place Thanjai Mamani Koil is a group of three temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple is also known as Divyadesam. The Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu is mainly worshiped here. This temple is one of the 108 such temple complexes of Lord Vishnu in India.
