Srinagar Shankaracharya Temple – Guide

The Shankaracharya temple is built on hill in Srinagar which is known as Gopadri. Shankaracharya is known as the great pioneer of Advaitaism. Kashmiri Pandits believe that Adi Shankara came here in the 8th century. Because of this reason, the name of this temple is Shankaracharya Temple. This temple of Lord Shiva is also popular by the name of Jyetheshwar Mahadev.

By climbing about 244 steps, the devotees reach in front of the temple. Being located at such a height, the temple offers a magnificent view of Srinagar city and the entire Dal Lake. This temple is built at a height of about 1000 feet from Srinagar. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is circular. From the main gate one has to climb 244 steps to reach the garden in front of the temple and another 30 steps to reach the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

A giant Shivalinga of Lord Shiva is installed in the sanctum sanctorum of this Temple. Looking at the style of this temple, it is estimated that it was built in the sixth or seventh century. After going down a few steps from the sanctum sanctorum, you see a small room made of stones, which is believed to be the penance place of Shankaracharya. In 1644 AD, Shah Jahan got the roof and pillars of the temple built. In this temple Shivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
