Jageshwar Dham Temple – Guide

The Jageshwar Dham Temple, which is also known as the “Jageshwar Dham Group of Temples”, are a group of over 100 Hindu temples built between the 7th and 12th centuries near Almora in the state of Uttarakhand in India. Jageshwar Temple, the largest of the 124 temples here, is the most visited by tourists and pilgrims. The Jageshwar temple is situated on the Jataganga valley which was constructed in the 9th century. Most of the temples located in Jageshwar are dedicated to Lord Shiva while other nearby temples are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Shakti and many other deities of Hinduism.

History of this Temple

The Jageshwar Dham Temple groups are about 2,500 years old and were built in the period from the 8th century which is early Katyuri dynasty to the 18th century which is Chand dynasty. These temples were renovated during the reign of Katyuri king Shalivahandeva. Here in the main complex of the temple there is an inscription of Malla kings which shows their devotion towards Jageshwar.

Katyuri kings also donated villages to the priests for the maintenance of the temple and Chand Raja of Kumaon was also the patron of Jageshwar temple. There are 25 inscriptions from different periods on the walls and pillars of the Jagareshwar temple, mostly from 7th century AD to 10th century AD. The language of these inscriptions is Sanskrit and Brahmi.

Best time to visit Jageshwar Dham Temple

During the whole Sawan month rudrabhishek of Shiva is done due to rain . Which lasts from 15 July to 15 August. Mahashiratri is also celebrated in a very beautiful way.

Jageshwar Dham Temple opens at 6:00 AM in the morning and close at 8:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 7:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 6:30 PM in the evening.

This is the famous Ashram of this place where you can stay easily. This place is located at a distance of about few kms away from the Jageshwar Mahadev Temple.

Maha Mrityunjaya Temple

This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is located at a distance of about few kms away from the Jageshwar Mahadev Temple.

How to reach Jageshwar Dham Temple

By Air- The nearest airport from Jageshwar Dham Temple is Pantnagar Airport which is at a distance of 150 km away from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Train- The nearest railway station from Jageshwar Dham Temple is Kathgodam railway station which is at a distance of 25 km from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Road- Jageshwar is well connected by road to many major cities of northern India. Jageshwar is located 37 kms from Almora. Here taxis are easily available to go to Jageshwar in Kumaon region.
