Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Among the twelve Jyotirlingas associated with Lord Shiva, Omkareshwar located in Madhya Pradesh comes fourth. Here Lord Shiva is sitting on the Om shaped mountain on the banks of Narmada river. There are many beliefs regarding Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Hinduism.

In which the biggest belief is that Lord Bholenath visits all the three worlds and comes to this temple everyday to sleep at night. Regarding this miraculous and mysterious Jyotirling of Mahadev, it is also believed that without offering water to this holy pilgrimage, all pilgrimages of a person are considered incomplete.

History of this Temple

In 1063, King Udayaditya installed four stone edicts with Sanskrit hymns. In 1195, Raja Bharat Singh Chauhan renovated the temple and built a palace near it.

There is a historical story related to Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, according to which King Mandhata once performed a difficult penance of Lord Shiva, pleased with which Mahadev appeared to him and asked him to ask for two boons. After which Mandhata asked him to sit at this place in the first groom and after that said that my name should also be added to your name.

It is believed that since then Lord Shiva is sitting here and people know this area by the name of Mandhata. A total of 68 pilgrimages are located around Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and here Lord Shiva is seated with 33 crore deities.

Best time to visit Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Mahashivratri is a popular festival which is considered as the night of Lord Shiva.

Ganesh Chaturthi festival is held in the months of August-September and is celebrated with great pomp and show.

Anant Chaudas festival is organised in the month of September in which major processions are taken out on the night of the festival and huge idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed in water.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is open from 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM in the morning and from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 6:30 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 8:00 PM in the evening.
