Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India, located in the ancient city of Ujjain on the banks of the Rudra Sagar Lake in the state of Madhya Pradesh, one of the most sacred and outstanding pilgrimage places for Hindus. South facing Mahakaleshwar Mahadev Lord Shiva is worshiped in this temple. Bhasma Aarti is performed every morning at Mahakal’s place. The specialty of this aarti is that Mahakal is decorated with the ashes of a dead person. This place is considered to be the holy abode of Lord Shiva. Moksha is attained just by visiting this temple.

History of this Temple

From 1107 to 1728, Ujjain was ruled by the Yavanas. During this reign almost the ancient traditions of Hindus were almost destroyed. After this Marathas attacked in Malwa region in 1690. Then on 29 November 1728, the Maratha rulers took over Malwa. After this the lost glory and shine of Ujjain came back again, after that it remained the capital of Malwa from 1731 to 1728. During the rule of Marathas, 2 big incidents happened here.

The first event was that the Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain located here earlier was rebuilt and the Jyotirlinga regained its lost prestige. Apart from this, Simhastha festival bath was established here which was a very special achievement. Later this temple was expanded by Raja Bhoj.

Best time to visit Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain

All the devotees participating in the daily yatra take a bath in the holy river Shipra here and after that visit Nagachandreshwar, Koteshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Devi Avantika, Devi Harsiddhi and Agrasenwara. Mahakaal yatra journey starts from Rudrasagar. Devotees visit the deities after taking a bath in Rudrasagar.

Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain opens at 7:00 AM in the morning and close at 11:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 7:30 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 7:00 PM in the evening.
