Jambukeswarar Temple – Guide

Jambukeswarar Temple, is located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. This temple is also known as Tiruvanaikoil Temple. The Shivling established in this temple, representing the water among the five elements, and know as is ‘Appu Lingam’. It is believed that one of the halls of this temple was built by Lord Shiva himself.

History of Jambukeswarar Temple

Jambukeswarar Temple has ancient and very mysterious history. At this place Mother Parvati in the form of Goddess Akilandeshwari did penance to Lord Shiva. He created the lingam from the water of river Kaveri, that is why it is called ‘Appu Lingam’. The goddess established the Shiva ling under a Jambu tree, so this temple is known as Jambukeswarar. Pleased with the penance of the goddess, Mahadev appeared to her at this place and made her understand the knowledge of Shiva.

It is known from some inscriptions found in the temple that it was built about 1800 years ago by the Chola king Kokenganan. This is the only temple in India where the marriage of Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva i.e. Mahashivaratri is not organized. This does not happen in this temple because here Mother Parvati is in the form of student and Lord Shiva is in the form of Guru.
