Duda’s dirty politics begins its reverse countdown and reignites Tusk’s bid

Duda’s mission autocracy is failing

The countdown to the Polish parliamentary elections on November 11, 2023, has begun. However, this electoral battle is marred by a whirlwind of controversy that threatens to overshadow the entire process.

A cloud of scandals surrounding the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party hangs over the political landscape of the country. PiS has been the subject of contentious judicial reforms, tense relations with the European Union, and intense debates at home and abroad.

Andrzej Duda, the president of Poland is a master of shady politics and is leading the way in the muck of controversy. Even his most ardent detractors have been surprised by Duda’s bold move as the elections get closer.

Recently, Duda proposed urgent amendments to a controversial Law on Russian influences, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from both the United States and the European Union. While Duda claims that the amendments are meant to enhance public transparency and safeguard Poland’s security, many see it as a thinly veiled attempt to silence political rivals and consolidate power.

Among those political rivals, none stands as tall as the formidable Donald Tusk. Duda’s proposed amendments to the law have ignited a firestorm of speculation, with many perceiving it as a personal attack on the former Polish leader. Critics argue that the amendments if enacted, would violate Polish Constitution and hinder opposition candidates in the upcoming elections.

They believe that Duda’s motive is clear: to cripple Tusk’s bid for political resurgence and ensure a smooth victory for PiS. However, Duda’s calculations seem to have backfired spectacularly.

Poland rises in arms

The Polish people have risen in protest, with over 700,000 citizens descending upon Warsaw to voice their opposition to the government’s right-wing populist policies. The Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has been in power since 2015, has come under fire for eroding democratic norms, attacking the independence of the judiciary, and launching campaigns against the LGBTQ+ community and reproductive rights.

The massive march, held on the 34th anniversary of a pivotal election that helped end communist rule in Poland marks a critical turning point in the country’s political landscape.

Leading the charge against PiS is none other than Donald Tusk himself, the former prime minister and current leader of the Civic Platform opposition grouping. Tusk, who served two terms as Poland’s prime minister from 2007 to 2014 before assuming the presidency of the European Council, has returned to national politics with renewed vigor.

Addressing the crowds at the rally, Tusk declared, “The whole of Poland, the whole of Europe, and the whole world see how strong we are and how we are ready to fight for democracy and freedom again, like we did 30, 40 years ago.”

With his stature rising and overwhelming support from the masses, Tusk’s bid for political power has been reignited, leaving Duda and his allies increasingly stressed and concerned about their political future.

The lost battleground

To make matters worse for Duda and PiS, Poland’s confrontational stance towards Russia has had dire economic consequences. Inflation has soared to a 25-year high, with the country’s economy bearing the brunt of their aggressive rhetoric.

Duda’s ill-conceived attempt to frame Tusk as pro-Russia has only served to rally support for the former leader. Tusk has a longstanding reputation as an anti-Russia advocate, and this feeble maneuver by Duda and his team has only bolstered Tusk’s political standing.

As Poland hurtles toward the parliamentary elections, it is abundantly clear that Duda’s dirty politics have set in motion a series of events that may reshape the nation’s political landscape. The controversies surrounding the Law and Justice (PiS) party, the resurgence of Donald Tusk, and the public outcry against government policies have converged to create a perfect storm of political drama.
