Democracy in Romania has been dying a slow death—no secret there. The country’s redoing its presidential elections in May, and Georgescu is still the top contender. He’s been gaining support for calling out the last election’s annulment, straight-up calling it a “coup” backed by Brussels. Georgescu is considered an anti-Ukraine figure who hates foreign interference, even claiming that Romania should have territorial claims over Ukraine once the dust settles—something Russia’s totally on board with.
It has been speculated that he is being kept out of politics on purpose ‘cause his win would mean more trouble on Ukraine’s border. And, of course, the EU is all for it. But Trump and his crew? They know exactly how to make life harder for Brussels. The decision’s out, and Bucharest-Brussels are freaking out.
According to an unverified report by Bloomberg, The Trump administration is putting pressure on Romanian authorities to let pro-Russian politician Călin Georgescu run his campaign without interference ahead of the May elections.
Trump Pressures Romania
The report claims that US officials have been laser-focused on Romania’s presidential race in private meetings, warning Romanian leaders not to mess with Georgescu’s chances.
Romania’s Foreign Ministry (MAE) clapped back with a statement, basically saying that while US officials have made public comments at the Munich Security Conference and on social media, there haven’t been any direct talks or pressure behind closed doors about Georgescu or the election. But yes, Bucharest is condemning such tactics by the U.S.
The ministry also made it clear—Romania and Europe are all in on democracy and free speech. They say they’re committed to strengthening their own defenses, taking more responsibility as Europeans, and keeping their elections, institutions, and info space solid—while staying tight with the US. A very nice joke indeed.
The pressure on Romania came to light after US Vice President JD Vance’s speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he called out Romania’s Constitutional Court for annulling the December 2024 presidential election. The court had scrapped the results after security officials claimed Russian interference helped Călin Georgescu pull off a shocking win in the first round on November 24.
After Vance’s speech, Romania’s foreign minister, Emil Hurezeanu, met with Trump’s envoys, Keith Kellogg and Richard Grenell, at the conference. Meanwhile, Romania’s economy minister, Bogdan Ivan, had his own sit-down with Vance at an AI summit in Paris earlier this month. This was an attempt to get Trump on the same page. But the move failed.
Despite these meetings, Romania’s government has struggled to keep a steady line of communication with the Trump administration, Bloomberg reports. The best part is that US officials seem oddly determined to back Georgescu, a known conservative figure, leaving Romanian authorities scratching their heads.
Georgescu Back in The Game
Billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk has also jumped on the Georgescu bandwagon. On Tuesday, February 18, he posted on X, backing Georgescu’s promise to ban organizations linked to George Soros if he wins the presidency.
If Georgescu wins again, which is likely if he is allowed, Romania, which has the longest EU border with Ukraine, can become another headache for Kyiv. Romanian elites are getting nervous—Bloomberg reports that many fear Washington’s heavy-handed interference in the elections could seriously damage their alliance with the US and Ukraine.
Georgescu has been gaining public traction only due to his Anti-Ukraine and Anti-West Stance. Meanwhile, Georgescu and his team are facing multiple investigations after claiming zero campaign expenses. Whether he actually gets to run will depend on the electoral office and a court decision on whether he even qualifies.
But with Trump’s backing, it looks like democracy in Bucharest might get a surprising revival. Whether Georgescu makes it to the ballot or gets blocked remains to be seen. One thing’s clear—Romania is now caught in the middle of a geopolitical tug-of-war, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
