FBI Director Kash Patel has declassified and handed over a set of intelligence documents to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, alleging a covert plot by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to interfere in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The explosive revelations come at a time of escalating geopolitical friction between the United States and China, further straining already tense diplomatic relations between the two superpowers.
“The FBI has located documents which detail alarming allegations related to the 2020 U.S. election, including interference by the CCP,” Patel announced on social media X. “I have immediately declassified the material and turned the documents over to Chairman Grassley for further review.”
Alleged CCP Plot to Aid Biden Campaign
According to sources cited by Just the News, the intelligence reports claim that the Chinese government mass-produced fake U.S. driver’s licenses and shipped them to the United States in the months leading up to the 2020 election. These counterfeit IDs were allegedly part of a scheme to enable Chinese nationals or operatives to vote using fraudulent mail-in ballots in favor of Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
The intelligence, originating from August 2020, was reportedly suppressed and not fully investigated at the time. Former FBI Director Christopher Wray had testified in 2020 that there was no evidence of foreign interference affecting the election’s outcome. However, Patel now says that new sources and internal reviews suggest otherwise.
The CBP confirmed that approximately 20,000 fake U.S. driver’s licenses were intercepted at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport by mid-2020. Most of these were shipped from China and Hong Kong and were reportedly intended for college-age individuals, often featuring identical photos with different names — a potential sign of identity fabrication on a mass scale.
Grassley to Lead Senate Review
Senator Grassley, who has long pushed for deeper scrutiny of foreign election meddling, is expected to conduct a formal review of the declassified materials. Patel praised the Senator’s persistence, saying:
“Thanks to the oversight work and partnership of Chairman Grassley, the FBI continues to provide unprecedented transparency at the people’s Bureau.”
Grassley had previously questioned why earlier warnings about Chinese interference were not fully vetted during or after the 2020 election cycle.
Tensions With China Reaching a Boil
The disclosure of these allegations arrives amid an intensifying cold-war-like standoff between the United States and China. Over the past year, diplomatic relations have frayed over a series of major flashpoints:
Cybersecurity Breaches: U.S. intelligence agencies have blamed China for several large-scale cyberattacks on American infrastructure and private corporations in 2024, prompting new sanctions.
Taiwan Strait Militarization: China’s aggressive naval maneuvers and simulated blockade exercises near Taiwan have drawn U.S. military counter-deployments and warnings.
Trade Retaliations: With both nations locked in a renewed trade dispute, recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on goods have sparked economic countermeasures from Beijing.
Fentanyl and Cartel Ties: In a bombshell statement at the National Sheriffs’ Association Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Patel accused the CCP of “actively partnering with drug cartels” to flood the U.S. with fentanyl and destabilize American communities — an allegation Chinese official have firmly denied.
These developments form part of what Patel described as a broader “covert war” being waged by Beijing against American sovereignty, institutions, and public trust.
Political Repercussions and 2024 Election Echoes
Patel’s declassification is already stirring waves within conservative circles, particularly among allies of President Donald Trump, who have long claimed the 2020 election was “rigged.” The new allegations are expected to reignite debate over mail-in voting security and foreign influence in U.S. elections.
President Trump, who lost the 2020 election but remains an influential figure in GOP politics, has yet to publicly respond to the latest revelations. However, early signals from media sources suggest the new documents may serve as further evidence to support long-standing claims of electoral misconduct.
Intelligence Community Split
While previous assessments by the U.S. intelligence community concluded that Russia was more active in trying to influence the 2020 election than China, the new documents, if verified, could lead to a reassessment of China’s role.
Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe had warned as early as late 2020 that China posed “the greatest threat to democracy” but was met with skepticism by some in the intelligence community. Now, Patel’s revelations may prompt Congress and intelligence agencies to revisit those early claims with a fresh lens.
What Comes Next?
The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to review the declassified intelligence in closed-door sessions. Patel, meanwhile, has committed to further disclosures, stating that additional documents related to CCP operations inside the U.S. may be released in the coming weeks.
“This is about national security, transparency, and restoring trust in our electoral process,” Patel said in a follow-up interview.
As the U.S. edges closer to the 2026 midterm elections, and with global tensions flaring, the stakes surrounding election integrity, foreign interference, and America’s posture toward China have never been higher.
