Elon Musk Says “America Party’ Will Give Americans Their Freedom Back

The formation of the America Party is both a product of Elon Musk’s personal and political rivalry with Donald Trump and a response to widespread dissatisfaction with the existing political order.

Elon Musk’s launch of the America Party marks a seismic moment in American politics—not only as a challenge to the entrenched two-party system but also as the flashpoint for a dramatic personal and ideological feud with Donald Trump. Once close allies, Musk and Trump have become bitter rivals, with their public fallout fueling the creation of a new political force.

Musk and Trump’s relationship began as a high-profile partnership. Musk, the world’s richest man and a tech visionary, was Trump’s largest individual donor and served as a key adviser, leading the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Their alliance was seen as mutually beneficial: Musk gained political influence, while Trump leveraged Musk’s business acumen and public appeal.

The alliance shattered over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”—a massive tax and spending package. Musk publicly denounced the bill as a “disgusting abomination” and warned it would “bankrupt the country.” This direct attack on Trump’s signature legislative achievement marked the end of their political partnership and the beginning of a highly public feud.

The dispute quickly escalated online. Musk accused Trump of fiscal recklessness, while Trump retaliated by threatening to cut government contracts to Musk’s companies and even floated the idea of deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa.

Musk called for Trump’s impeachment and made unsubstantiated allegations about Trump’s connections to controversial figures, only to later delete these posts and express regret for going “too far.”

Trump questioned Musk’s mental state and loyalty, while Musk accused Trump of ingratitude and betrayal. Both men used their massive social media followings to fan the flames of their feud.

The Birth of the America Party

Musk’s announcement of the America Party came directly on the heels of his split with Trump. Framing the two-party system as a “uniparty” plagued by waste and corruption, Musk positioned his new party as a vehicle to “give you back your freedom.” He conducted a poll on his platform X, with over 1.2 million respondents—65% of whom supported the creation of a new party.

While the America Party’s official platform is still taking shape, Musk’s statements and online interactions suggest several core themes:

Challenging the ‘Uniparty’: A direct challenge to both Democrats and Republicans, whom Musk accuses of being indistinguishable on key issues like government waste and fiscal irresponsibility.

Fiscal Conservatism: Emphasis on reducing debt, cutting waste, and government efficiency.

Centrist, Pro-Technology: Advocacy for military modernization and a pro-technology agenda, especially in artificial intelligence and clean energy.

Strategic Focus: Rather than contesting every seat, Musk aims to target a handful of Senate and House races, seeking to become a kingmaker in a closely divided Congress.

Principle or Personal Rivalry?

Musk’s opposition to Trump’s bill stems from his fiscal conservatism and pro-technology stance. He criticized the bill for increasing the national debt and cutting support for clean energy—issues directly impacting his businesses and worldview.

The timing and tone of Musk’s actions suggest that personal animosity and a sense of betrayal are as much at play as policy differences. Musk’s dramatic exit from the Trump administration and subsequent attacks on Trump’s character underscore the personal nature of the split.

While Musk is constitutionally barred from running for president, the America Party allows him to remain a disruptive force in U.S. politics and to challenge Trump’s dominance of the Republican Party.

Musk has likened his strategy to the ancient Battle of Leuctra, advocating for “extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield”—in this case, select congressional races.

The US has a long history of failed third-party movements. Structural barriers—ballot access, campaign finance, and voter loyalty make it extremely difficult for new parties to gain traction. The America Party faces these same challenges.

Challenges Ahead for Musk

Lack of Policy Detail: America Party’s platform is more rhetorical than substantive, with few concrete policy proposals beyond broad calls for efficiency and freedom.

Feasibility: The US electoral system is stacked against third parties. Legal, financial, and institutional hurdles have historically doomed similar efforts, regardless of initial enthusiasm.

Personal Drama: The Musk-Trump feud, while attention-grabbing, risks overshadowing substantive policy debate and may alienate voters seeking real solutions.

Leadership Questions: Musk’s constitutional ineligibility for the presidency raises questions about the party’s long-term leadership and direction.

The formation of the America Party is both a product of Elon Musk’s personal and political rivalry with Donald Trump and a response to widespread dissatisfaction with the existing political order. Their feud has transformed a policy disagreement into a battle for influence, legacy, and the future direction of American politics.

Whether Musk’s new party can move beyond the shadow of this rivalry and become a lasting force remains to be seen. For now, the America Party stands as a symbol of disruption—driven as much by personal ambition as by genuine political vision.
