Reports suggest that AI tools played a significant role in helping the US military conduct a rapid and massive wave of strikes during the early phase of the war, sparking global debate about the dangers of relying on algorithms in life-and-death military decisions.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, the United States launched more than 1,000 airstrikes within the first 24 hours of its military campaign against Iran. Much of this speed and scale, analysts say, was made possible through advanced AI-assisted targeting systems.

The US military reportedly used AI tools, including models developed by Anthropic and battlefield analytics software from Palantir Technologies, to process vast amounts of intelligence data and prioritize potential targets.

The use of such technology has drawn intense scrutiny from lawmakers, technology experts, and rival powers, particularly after reports of civilian casualties linked to the early strikes.

AI Systems Accelerate Target Selection

The AI model involved in the operations included Claude AI, developed by Anthropic, which was integrated with Palantir’s military data-analysis platform known as Project Maven. These systems analyze surveillance feeds, satellite imagery, and signals intelligence to identify patterns and potential military targets.

By rapidly processing this data, the AI systems reportedly helped military planners generate and prioritize large numbers of targets for airstrikes.

The result was one of the fastest large-scale bombing campaigns in recent military history.

However, the unprecedented pace has also raised questions about whether human oversight kept up with the speed of algorithm-assisted decision making.

Civilian Casualties Raise Alarm

Concerns intensified after a tragic incident early in the campaign. A US airstrike reportedly struck an Iranian elementary school building, killing more than 150 children.

A preliminary investigation by the U.S. Department of Defense indicated that the strike may have been caused by outdated or inaccurate targeting data. Officials have not yet confirmed whether AI systems played a direct role in selecting the target.

On February 26, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, released a detailed statement cautioning against the use of advanced AI models in autonomous weapons systems.

Amodei argued that current “frontier AI systems” are not reliable enough to make life-or-death decisions on the battlefield.

He emphasized that AI tools should remain decision-support systems rather than fully autonomous weapons capable of selecting and attacking targets without human oversight.

“Human judgment must remain central to decisions involving lethal force,” Amodei said in interviews following the statement.

Despite such warnings, the Pentagon reportedly expanded the integration of AI systems into military planning and targeting operations.

China Issues ‘Terminator’ Warning

The rapid adoption of AI in combat has also drawn criticism from rival global powers.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, Jiang Bin, warned that unchecked military use of artificial intelligence could push the world toward a dystopian future similar to that depicted in the science-fiction film The Terminator.

The 1984 film portrays a future where AI-controlled machines wage war against humanity.

While such scenarios remain fictional for now, Beijing argues that allowing algorithms to influence lethal military decisions could erode accountability and ethical safeguards in warfare.

AI Already Changing Modern Warfare

Experts note that artificial intelligence is already widely used in military operations around the world. Most systems today function as decision-support tools, helping analysts interpret massive volumes of intelligence data more quickly than humans alone could.

However, critics warn that the growing reliance on automated systems could gradually reduce the role of human oversight.

As AI becomes faster and more capable, military planners may increasingly depend on algorithm-generated targeting recommendations.

This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as “automation creep,” raises fears that humans could eventually become little more than formal sign-offs in lethal decisions.
