Career
Leslie Torres is a proud Hartford resident, raising her two sons with her spouse. Dr. Torres-Rodriguez formerly served as Acting Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Leadership at Hartford Public Schools, where she provided culturally bold leadership to support a network of 11 schools’ comprehensive improvement efforts. She worked at magnet and neighborhood schools as an Assistant Principal and Principal.
Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez previously worked as a School Social Worker at Goodwin Technical High School and taught social and behavioral science at Capital Community College. She worked at San Juan Tutorial Program, Inc., a non-profit community-based organization that provides academic and enrichment services to Hartford students as well as parenting skills training and assistance to families, for five years.
Achievements
Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez conducted a comprehensive citywide engagement process that resulted in a unanimous Board of Education vote in support of the District Model for Excellence, an equity-focused plan to rebuild, reimagine, consolidate, and close 20% of the schools in order to enhance student outcomes.
She created and implemented an equity-focused budgeting approach and formula that resulted in increased funding for Multilingual Learners, kids with learning disabilities, disengaged students, and early college programming.
She established the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, which focuses on participatory student budgeting, to harness student opinion. She has reduced budget deficits totaling $105 million between 2017 and 2020 by working with elected officials to pass $245 million in capital improvement legislation, which includes two new school campuses that co-locate magnets and neighborhood schools, a new neighborhood school, and a new education complex that includes a comprehensive neighborhood high school and district operational offices.
Dr. Torres-Rodriguez graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and a Master of Social Work, as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University.
Awards and milestones
Leslie Torres received the 2019 Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (CALAS) Award for Educational Leadership, the 2019 Prospanica National Brillante Award for Educational Excellence, and she was featured in Hartford Magazine’s “Women of Distinction” issue.
Dr. Torres-Rodriguez is a member of the Governor’s Workforce Council and serves on the Hartford Promise board. She also co-chairs the Mayor’s Cabinet for Young Children in Hartford.
