In January 2002 Dwayne Smith made his first-class debut for Barbados in a Busta Cup match against Guyana. In the year 2008 Smith was selected to the Mumbai Indians squad during the inaugural IPL season.
After that in next season of the IPL, Smith was bought by the Deccan Chargers at the player auction for $100,000. In the year 2014, Smith was bought by Chennai Super Kings for Rs. 42,500,000. In 2013 For his performances, he was selected in the Cricinfo CLT20 XI. In the 2019 Global T20 Canada tournament he was selected to play for the Winnipeg Hawks franchise team in June 2019.
After the 2002–03 Red Stripe Bowl, to tour South Africa Smith was included in the West Indies squad.
On 2 January 2004 he made his debut for test in which match was played against South Africa.
On 25 January 2004 he made his debut in ODI in which again match was played against South Africa.
On 16 February 2006 he made his debut for T20I in which match was played against New Zealand.
On 1st March, 2017 Smith announced his retirement from international cricket. After taking retirement from international cricket, Smith participate in the second edition of the 2017 Hong Kong T20 Blitz and there he became the first player as well as first overseas player who scored a century in Hong Kong T20 blitz. Due to his playing style, he was recognised as sir Viv Richards.
