Ira Singhal Biography and Career

Engineer in computer science and member of the Indian Administrative Service, Ira Singhal. She achieved the best score in the 2014 Civil Services Examination of the UPSC. She earned her B.Tech from the University of Delhi’s Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology and her MBA from FMS Delhi. Despite passing the most difficult exam on her first try, Ira Singhal was denied the job because of a physical impairment, as officials highlighted her inability to push, pull, and lift. Due to her scoliosis, she was denied a posting. She brought a claim in 2012 and won it in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) after four years.

As a result, the Indian Revenue Service appointed her as an Assistant Commissioner (C&CE). In 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, Singhal took the civil service test. In her first three attempts, she was selected for the Indian Revenue Service. In 2015, however, she was selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

She represents the Department of Disability within the Indian government’s Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. She serves on the Election Commission of India’s National Panel for Accessible Elections and is one of the brand ambassadors for the Ministry of Women and Child Development and NITI Aayog.

Short biography of Ira Singhal

After graduating from the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan, Ira Singhal went on to study computer engineering at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (which is now the Netaji Subhas University of Technology, or NSUT), and she also received a dual MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies at the University of Delhi in marketing and finance.

She obtained her MBA after which she interned in marketing at the Coca-Cola Company and Cadbury India before attempting the Civil Services Exam in 2010. She also spent a year instructing Spanish. Since June 2016, she has been employed by the Delhi government as an Assistant Collector (trainee).

Ira has never been wed. She is single and never has been. She stated in an interview that she will get married when she meets her soul partner.

She has been working for a number of social causes, such as the promotion of khadi and indigenous fabrics, the empowerment of people with disabilities, the empowerment and support of the transgender community, women’s empowerment, the abolition of child labor and child marriage, the prevention of the unauthorized conversion of green spaces, and green energy.

In her initial position as SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate), Alipur in the North Delhi district, she saved about 340 children and bonded laborers, and returned them to their families in less than a year.

She is also the first individual to offer a transgender person in Delhi a full-time position in a government office.
