Battle of Talikota: History and introduction
The Battle of Talikota is considered to be one of the most disastrous battles of India. Battle of Talikota was fought on 23 January 1565 AD between the Sultanates of Deccan and the Vijayanagara Empire.
This battle of Vijayanagara Empire was fought near a village named Rakshasa-Tangadi. The Vijayanagara Empire had to face defeat in this war. With this the last Hindu kingdom of South India collapsed.
In the Indian subcontinent battle Of Talikota” refers to one of the important battles that took place. As a result of “Battle of Talikota” it seems that there is the bloodshed of thousands of people on the war fields. This battle is between the “Sultans of Deccan” and “Vijayanagar kingdom” which led to the defeat of “Vijayanagar kingdom”.
After that battle, the kingdom slowly falls in. The battle was quite conclusive in nature and was started to break up the domination of Telugu speakers. “Battle Of Talikota” refers to the very final invasion of the Muslims into the southern regions of India, which almost stayed till the end of the 18th century.
This is how the foundation of war was laid
Sadasiva Raya was the ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire at the time of the Battle of Talikota. Historians say that Sadashiv was a nominal ruler, the real power of this power was also in the hands of his minister Ram Rai.
Sadasiva Raya tried to crush the Deccan sultanates completely by creating discord during his rule, however later these sultanates came to know about this plan of Vijayanagara and they united and formed an alliance did. This alliance included Ahmednagar, Bijapur, Golconda and Bidar. Due to mutual enmity between Golconda and Berar, Berar did not join it.
The war started by Sultan Ali Adilshah of Bijapur demanding the return of forts like Raichur, Mudgal, Adoni etc. From Vijayanagara. Minister Ram Rai rejected this demand.
After which on 23 January 1565 the war started between the combined forces and Vijayanagar at Talikota (Rakshasi Tanggi or Banni Hatti). Defeated the Vijayanagara army badly in the war. 70 year old Ram Rai fought bravely but was surrounded and brutally killed. Later the city of Vijayanagara was mercilessly looted.
Jealousy and hatred were the reason for this political war
The Battle of Talikota marked the end of the glorious era of the Vijayanagara Empire. Historians say that the real reason for this war was the common jealousy and hatred of the southern sultanates towards Vijayanagara. It was a kind of political war.
Sewell was an eyewitness to this battle. He wrote about this war that the third day saw the beginning of the end. After the victory of the battle, the Muslims stayed on the battlefield for rest and refreshments, after which Vijayanagara was plundered continuously for five months from that time when they reached the capital. They set fire to the lavishly decorated buildings of Vitthal Swami’s temple near the river and massacred fiercely.

Result of Battle of Talikota
After the Battle of Talikota, the prominence of the Vijayanagara kingdom in South Indian politics came to an end. The kingdom of Mysore, the Nayakas of Vellore and the Nayakas of Keladi in Shimoga declared their independence from Vijayanagara. However, these Deccan sultanates could not take advantage of this defeat of Vijayanagara and again engaged in fighting with each other as before and eventually came under the attack of the Mughals.
