Dong Guangping: The Canadians believe that their country sits next in line to China when it comes to cracking down on human rights. They believe that their prime minister is the next dictator-in-making of which China tops the list. Unfortunately, the foreigners seeking asylum in the country were unaware of this fact. They seem to have gotten inspired by the dominant spectrum of the media, which advertises Trudeau as a miraculous politician.
Justin Trudeau has provided refuge to migrants from all over the world, including Hong Kongers and Chinese who have fled oppressive regimes, but, little did the poor refugees know that Mr Trudeau would rock the boat later.
A few months back, it was reported that Hong Kongers living in Canada have a fear of being sent back to their homes, where they face the fear of imprisonment. The open work permit program that Canada launched last year to allow Hong Kongers to stay in Canada is causing resentment because the programs have yet to be renewed. This worries Hong Kongers, who fear they will be deported back to China by the Trudeau regime. And guess what? Something similar is now coming to light as the Canadian government might not hesitate to deport Chinese citizens back to an oppressive regime.
According to a recent report, the daughter of a Chinese human-rights activist accepted as a refugee by Canada is appealing to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to help free him after Dong Guangping went missing in Vietnam recently.
Katherine Dong, a Canadian citizen who now resides in Toronto, expressed concern that her father may have been sent back to China in the interim. She claimed that since his detention in August, no one has spoken to him.

Ms. Dong pleaded with Vietnam and China to let her father leave for Canada. She said Canadian diplomats tell her they can no longer get information from Vietnamese government officials about the case.
Back in 2015, Mr. Dong Guangping escaped from China to Thailand with his family. He, his wife, and his daughter were recognized as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Canada accepted them for refugee resettlement.
As reported in the Globe and Mail, Mr Dong Guangping was then deported back to China by Thailand. This action by Thailand is considered illegal by international law experts. After being released from a Chinese prison in August 2019, Mr Dong Guangping escaped to Vietnam in January 2020, where he spent the next 31 months hiding out.
The Canadian government has provided Mr. Dong Guangping with travel permits so that he can leave for Canada, but Ottawa has been unsuccessful in getting Vietnamese authorities to accept the paperwork and allow him to leave. Canada’s attempts to confirm Mr. Dong’s condition are currently being stymied. Ms. Dong Guangping urged Mr Trudeau to find out what happened to her father.
The Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, Melanie Joly, when asked about the missing activist, said Canada is worried about him and is working to ascertain his whereabouts. Earlier this week Joly states, “Canada won’t apologize for speaking up for human rights in China and the rest of Asia.”
But at the same time, she is also saying that she is open to the idea of working with China on certain issues and is open to collaboration.
In fact, Joly said she expects to be seated next to a Chinese official in a few days at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia since these summits often seat countries in English alphabetical order.
Keep in mind that this comes after Trudeau warned China against playing “aggressive games” a few days prior. When Canadians still do not have answers to pressing issues like which politicians benefited from the now confirmed Chinese involvement in Canada’s 2019 election, surely this cooperation with China is the least expected.
Clearly, Canadian officials’ words and actions don’t run parallel to each other. The country has the audacity to stand against human rights violations on a global stage, but when it comes to taking action against China, they are of course acting in the latter’s interests. The Asylum seekers, who were once thankful to the Canadian government, are now devastated as they are now being thrown back into the dragon’s mouth.
