History of this Temple

Once a king named Kootru Nannan had a mango orchard, and his love for mangoes was immense. He never distributed the fruit to anyone, nor did he allow anyone to enjoy it. Once while plucking a mango, he slipped and fell into the river.

A woman was taking a bath in the river, she unknowingly tasted the fruit that belonged to the king’s garden. The enraged king beheaded the woman. Since then, she is worshiped as Masani and continues to fight against injustice.

Another history says that Lord Rama stayed at a graveyard in Annamalai while searching for Sita. Before leaving for Sri Lanka, Lord Rama made an idol of the Goddess to be worshiped using clay. Therefore, the image is placed as such.
