Siruvapuri Shri Balasubramaniaswamy Temple – Overview

Siruvapuri Shri Balasubramaniaswamy Temple is a famous Murugan temple is located on the Chennai-Kolkata highway at a distance of about 40 kms from the city of Chennai. This place near Ponneri is now called Chinnambedu. This temple was called Siruvar Por Pori in which Siruvar means children and Por me Pori means waging war. The presiding deity of the temple here is Murugan, known as Sri Balasubramaniar.

In Tamil literature, Murugan is known as Murukan, The Youth. His name is mentioned in Shaiva Puranas, most significantly in the Skanda Purana. His name finds much mention in Tamil Sangam literature, and all six of his abodes are spread across Tamil Nadu.

History of this Temple

The history of Siruvapuri Shri Balasubramaniaswamy Temple tells that Lava and Kush, the sons of Rama, lived at this place. Once when Rama was passing by this place, he fought with Rama himself without knowing that he was his father. Since small children fought here, the place was called Siruvar Por Puri. The place now called Chinnambedu was originally the Siruvar Ambu Edu.

Some hundreds of years ago a woman named Murugamai lived in this village. She was a very ardent devotee of Lord Muruga here. For years she always chanted his name and prayed to him. Her husband who did not like her worshiping all the time was warning her to stop it. But she did not listen to him and one day her husband cut off her arms in a fit of rage. Yet, Murugamai only cried to Lord Muruga for help. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord joined his hands without even a trace of wound.
