Maa Durga Mandir is a Hindu temple located in the city of Varanasi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Durga Mandir is also known as Durga Kund and Lal Mandir. The city of Varanasi is a very holy and special place for Hindus and this city also has religious importance in Hinduism. Durga Mandir is one of the temples in old Varanasi. The city of Varanasi is also known as Kashi. The mention of Durga temple is also found in ‘Kashi Khand’.

History of Durga Temple Varanasi

The Maa Durga Mandir was built by Rani Bhavani of Bengal in the 18th century. The temple was built in the North Indian Nagara style of architecture. The temple is painted red with ocher to match the colours of the central icon of Goddess Durga. The temple is made up of several small shikharas. It is believed that the main idol of the temple, that of Goddess Durga, is Swayambhu i.e. the idol was not created by any person.

Maa Durga is present in the form of ‘Yantra’ in this temple. Behind the Durga temple is the temple of Goddess Annapurna and Ganesha. There are two gates to enter the Maa Durga Mandir. The main gate is in front of the main complex of the temple and the second gate, which is smaller, is on the right side of the temple. There are also temples of Baba Bhaironath, Lakshmiji, Saraswatiji, Hanumanji and Mata Kali in the Durga temple.

The temple of Durga in Varanasi Opens all the days in a week. Devotees can perform a pilgrimage to the temple on any day from morning 5:00 AM to evening 11:00 PM.

In the months of July – August, a special puppet show is held in this temple, which is related to the Ramayana.

By Air- The Nearest airport from this temple is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport which is at a distance of nearly 27.2 kms from Maa Durga Mandir. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Train- The Nearest railway station from this temple is Varanasi City railway station which is at a distance of nearly 6.1 kms from Durga Mandir and Kashi railway station which at a distance of nearly 5.9 kms from Maa Durga Mandir.

By Road- Roads of Banaras are well connected with the other cities of the country so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or by any public buses or taxi from any part of the country.
