Dhari Devi Mandir Garhwal – Guide

Dhari Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is an ancient, spiritual temple located on the banks of the Alaknanda River between Srinagar and Rudraprayag in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

Dhari Devi Mandir is the protector of Char Dham (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri) in Uttarakhand. Dhari Devi Temple is one of the 108 Shakti Sthals. Devotees worship Goddess Dhari as the upper half part of the idol. According to devotees, the goddess changes from a girl to a woman and then to an old woman during the day.

History of this Temple

The history of the Dhari Devi Mandir reflects a popular story about the temple. It states that once due to flood in the Alaknanda River, the idol of Goddess Kali crashed against a large rock. After which, the people of “Dharo” village heard the divine voice of the deity and they installed the idol of Goddess Kali at the place where the temple is present. After this incident it is known as Dhari Devi Temple.

When Adi Guru Shankaracharya went for an expedition, he took some rest and worshiped in this area. If this is true then there is a possibility that this temple is of Dwaparayuga. The idol is placed in the open sky because devotees believe that the idol of the Goddess should not be kept under the roof.
