Belarus arming Zimbabwe is scary for the west

The Russo- Ukrainian war has led to countries redefining their foreign affairs, which in turn has made the geo political paradigm quite dynamic and unexpected. The events taking place everyday are somewhat surprising. Zimbabwe is experiencing this dynamism

It is not a hidden fact that Zimbabwe has been riling under the US imposed sanctions on grounds that are not even justifiable any more. It would not be wrong to say that these sanctions are in place to not only ostracize Zimbabwe from the international community but also to break its spirit to develop. USA has always eyed the rich resources of Africa, and Zimbabwe being a resource rich country has always attracted the vulturous eyes of western plunderers, specifically the USA.

Russian influence  is on the rise in the African continent, as it seems to be a more legitimate partner to deal with in comparison to the USA-EU nexus. Belarus, a very close ally of Russia too has found its presence in Africa. Post Mnangagwa’s visit to the capital city of Minsk, Belarus in 2019, Harare saw the opening of the Belarusian embassy on 11 July 2022.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 30th Jan  arrived in Zimbabwe for talks with his counterpart in what analysts said was an attempt by the two leaders to “diversify” their diplomatic ties. Belarus has historically mostly looked to export its military expertise and kit. It is easy to put two and two together. Zimbabwe taking headstrong steps to bolster its growth on one hand and getting armed to face any western adversity on the other, is highly unsettling for US-EU nexus.
