Maa Kali Mandir Kolkata – Guide
Mother Sati’s right toe had fallen in the Maa Kali Mandir Kolkata also known as Kalighat temple of Kolkata. Since then this place is considered as Shaktipeeth. Shaktipeeths have the most importance in India. These Shaktipeeths are the places where the dead body parts of Mata Sati fell. These places are located all over India as well as in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal.
History of this Temple
The Kalighat temple Maa Kali Mandir Kolkata in its present form is about 200 years old, although it is referred to in the 15th century Mansar Bhasan and in the 17th century poet Kankan Chandi. The present visible temple was established in 1809. This temple was completed with the help of a wealthy businessman named Sabarn Roy Chowdhury of Kolkata. Apart from this, the mention of this temple is also found in some compositions of 15th and 17th century. After getting some coins of Gupta dynasty in Kalighat temple, it is known that even during the Gupta period, there was a movement of devotees in this temple.
The most special thing about Kalighat Temple in Kolkata is that earlier this temple was situated on the banks of Hooghly. But with time, Bhagirathi kept moving away from the temple. Now this temple is situated on the banks of a canal named Adiganga, which eventually joins the Hooghly river.

Maa Kali Mandir Kolkata opens from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the morning and from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the evening. The first aarti of the temple is performed at 4am in the morning.
