Gangasagar Mandir Bengal – Guide

Gangasagar Mandir Bengal is a wonderful island located just off the coast of Bengal. Ganga Sagar is the meeting point of the Ganga River and the Bay of Bengal. It is said that long ago the stream of river Ganga used to meet in Sagar, but now a very small stream of Ganga meets Sagar near this island.

Gangasagar Mandir of Bengal is a place of religious importance. It is considered very auspicious to take a bath in this island spread over 300 square miles. Located in the South Twenty Four Parganas district of West Bengal on Makar Sankranti, this pilgrimage centre is like hundreds of pilgrimages.

History of this Temple

According to Hindu scriptures, King Sagar performed an Ashwamedha Yagya to win control over the entire universe. When his horse was about to conquer the earth, Lord Indra panicked and hid the Ashwamedha horse, abandoned by Maharaja Sagar, near Kapilmuni’s hermitage. The king’s 60 thousand sons held Muni responsible for this theft.

This enraged the sage and he cursed the king’s sons and burnt them to ashes. Later he agreed that if a descendant of the king could bring the holy Ganges here, the princes would attain salvation. After many generations, King Bhagirath of this dynasty brought Ganga down to earth with his tenacity and effort.
