Mexico protests: Many cities in Mexico have seen large-scale protests over what the opposition claims are government tactics to sabotage the vote process.

The largest occurred in Mexico City, where organisers estimate that 500,000 people marched through the center of the city. The figure was 90,000 according to the regional government.

On 27th February, lawmakers in Mexico decided to reduce the National Electoral Institute’s (INE) budget and workforce. The INE is deemed biased by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Obrador was chosen as president in July 2018. He has long criticized the INE, whose employees supervise elections. Obrador stated that the institution has committed several atrocious attacks on democracy in Mexico, noting that the INE’s employees covered up the stuffing of ballot boxes, falsifying of election records and vote purchasing.

US-backed Mexico protests

Now, Obrador also challenged the results of the 2012 general elections in Mexico which saw Enrique Peña Nieto coming into power. Unlike Obrador, Nieto was had good ties with the US. The same US which will not think twice before breaking the long-established trust with its allies and partners. In fact, despite being treated harshly by Washington, Nieto strived for partnership with one of the most treacherous nations in the world.

Following, Obrador’s arrival into power, Mexico has implemented several anti-US measures which has irked the US. In February, Mexico established and consolidated its ties with Cuba, which one of the chief adversaries of the US. Similarly, Mexico refused to recognize the illegitimate government in Peru established by a US-backed coup. Also, Mexico resolved to take the concerning issue of gun trafficking from the US into its territory to a court in the US.

Therefore, it is likely that the US is funding these protests in Mexico. The Biden administration wants to defame Mexico so that it justifies Washington’s sanctions or coup and facilitates in establishing a coup in the country just like Peru.
