Mexico has long been a target of US interference in its domestic politics. This time, the US has breached the patience of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO). In a recent speech, AMLO directly addressed US interference in Mexico’s internal affairs and urged the US to “butt out” of Mexico democracy.
“Butt Out”
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico has expressed support for a bill that would reduce the funds of the nation’s electoral agency and reduce the ability to monitor campaign expenditures.
AMLO issued a very brusque reply to the criticisms of the US State Department regarding the new law. He said, “With total respect, I say to Mr. [Antony] Blinken of the Department of State that there is currently more democracy in Mexico than in the United States.”
AMLO denounced the interventions of the chief U.S. diplomat in the nation’s matters. The Mexican leader refrained from criticizing President Biden, whom he noted put Mexico on a par with the United States.

He stated, “I take this opportunity to reply to the Department of the United States: as is his bad habit, he meddles in matters that do not correspond to him, very contrary to what President Biden says, who speaks of equality, of an equal footing.”
Blinken was advised by AMLO to take action on matters of democracy in Peru, as he declared that wrongdoings had taken place in the removal of Pedro Castillo.
He jibed, “Let them deal with what is happening in Peru, where the United States ambassador there is the adviser to the coup plotters who trampled on freedom and democracy in that country, unjustly removing the president and imprisoning him.”
The Mexican president lamented the fact that there are still people in positions of power in the United States that persist in maintaining the same policy that was in place two centuries ago, acting as if the country is the ruler of the world.
He added, “And it’s not just the State Department, it’s nature, at least custom, that comes from centuries in the government and in the elites of the United States.”
AMLO expressed his disappointment that an American paper featured the “My vote is not touched” rally, which was organized to show support for the National Electoral Institute, on the front page.
He noted that eight columns and a photograph were devoted to the event, claiming that “this newspaper, like others in the United States, shields the global economic mafias”. Furthermore, he jibed at the contrast between Mexico and the US, where the people are in charge in the former and the oligarchs reign in the latter.
Blinken’s intrusion
The US did not directly criticize the electoral measure. It snakingly expressed the significance of “respect for judicial independence” in a “healthy democracy”. Washington also indicated its support for “independent, well-resourced electoral institutions that strengthen democratic processes and the rule of law.”

The State Department further said, “Today, in Mexico, we see a great debate on electoral reforms on the independence of electoral and judicial institutions that illustrates vibrant democracy of Mexico. We respect Mexico’s sovereignty.”
AMLO’s speech is a sign of a new wave of Mexican leaders who are more willing to stand up for their country and its people, and to challenge US interference in their domestic affairs. The speech is a clear indication that Mexico is ready to take a stand against US interference in its democracy, and that it will not allow any foreign government to meddle in its internal affairs.
