Jotiba Mandir Kolhapur – Guide

The famous Jotiba Mandir at Wadi Ratnagiri above Panhala near Kolhapur in Maharashtra represents both the sacred fire or Jyoti and the sun god in the form of Agni. Jyotiba Temple is about 20 km from Kolhapur.

History of this Temple

The Kolhapur Jotiba Mandir was built by Navaji Saya. The present temple was built by Ranoji Shinde in 1730 AD. The Kedareshwar temple in the complex was built by Daulatrao Shinde in 1808. The Ramalinga temple was built by Malji Neelam Panyalkar in 1780 AD. Yamai Temple and Jamdagni Tank were built by Ranoji Shinde. Jyotiba sits on a horse, and so it is possible that he represents the sun god in many symbolic ways. The image faces south, towards the Mahalakshmi Temple, in Kolhapur as a protective gesture towards her.
