Russia to the Rescue: Nicaragua Finds a Powerful Ally

The US has been known to disdain the Nicaraguan President, Daniel Ortega. The hegemon of the international order has been fuelling protests in Nicaragua and trying to overthrow the Ortega government. The protests continued well into 2022, since 2018.

Previously, we have told our readers how the US even deployed the UN in the Latin American country to fabricate reports of human rights violations. Under the pretext of human rights, the US tried to threaten Nicaragua to make it fall in line. The UN had even attempted to impose sanctions on Nicaragua to further the agenda of the US. The UN backed group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua urged the international community to impose restrictive measures on Nicaragua.

The “experts” concluded that President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo “put into practice these crimes” which continue today. These were some big charges levelled against the Nicaraguan leadership which perfectly aligned with the US’ agenda in the country.

However, much to Washington’s shock, the Nicaraguan government refused to get intimidated by its tactics. The Managua Court of Appeals mandated the expulsion of 222 US-backed activists. They had also been convicted of offenses such as instigation of violence, terrorism, and economic sabotage.

After all this, now the Latin American country has found a friend in Russia.

In the ongoing battle for influence between the West and Russia, the latter has now been able to earn goodwill from Nicaragua in the Latin American continent. Russia has strongly come out in support of Nicaragua and “exposed” the West’s anti-Nicaraguan campaign.

Speaking at the UN, the Russian representative has maintained that “after the failed attempted coup in 2018, organized and sponsored from abroad, the collective West is continuing its anti-Nicaraguan campaign and the Human Rights Council demonstratively is disregarding the achievements of the lawful government of Nicaragua.”

Further, Russia also criticised the recent UN report and said that it is “replete with accusatory rhetoric” and came down heavily on the West for trying to coerce a sovereign country. Perhaps, the West didn’t see it coming and now Russia coming to rescue Nicaragua will certainly cause a geopolitical upheaval in the Latin American continent.
