Nainital Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple – Guide

Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most famous temples in India which is located in the Nainital Uttarakhand. This temple is a very ancient temple of India which is about 350 years old. Mukteshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the creator of this world. This temple is located at the highest point in Mukteshwar and the place is also named after this temple.

The height of Nainital Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is about 2312 meters above sea level. This ancient temple is known in the Hindu scriptures as one of the eighteen most important temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Mukteshwar temple also has a Shiva Linga of white marble.

History of this Temple

Nainital Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple was build dates back to 10th century BC. According to the Puranas, Mukteshwar Temple is one of the 18 major temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a legend about this temple according to which once there was a huge fight between a demon and Lord Shiva. The demon was defeated in this war, he attained liberation. It is also believed that many deities, as well as the Pandavas, had visited the temple and graced it with their presence. This magnificent temple is said to have been built by King Yayati I of the Somavamshi dynasty.

Nainital Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is a wonderful specimen of Odisha architecture, which comes in the list of protected monuments of India. The architecture of this temple is very attractive and here along with the linga of Lord Shiva, many of his idols in the temple can be seen making different meditative postures. Here the structure of the west-facing Mukteshvara temple marks the transition between the early and later periods of the Kalinga style of architecture. Many important ceremonies and religious programs are organized by the devotees of Lord Shiva in Mukteshwar Temple.
