No matter what his intentions were, Hipkins’ comments have sparked an uproar in the New Zealand LGBT community. His refusal to recognize gender fluidity as a legitimate concept has angered many. To them, Hipkins’ words are a sign of the nation’s backward attitude towards gender identity. This attitude is nothing new for New Zealand. The New Zealand is one of the most socially conservative countries in the world, and its long–standing attitude towards gender fluidity is no exception.

At a recent press conference, veteran journalist Sean Plunkett threw a curveball question at Hipkins: “how do you, and how does this government, define a woman?” And let me tell you, it didn‘t go well. Hipkins stumbled over his words, desperately trying to come up with an answer. “The… well, biology, sex, gender, ummm…people define themselves,” he said, taking long pauses between each answer. And when Plunkett brought up the fact that a lot of guys are labeling themselves as transgender, Hipkins could only respond with a sharp criticism of “Wokeism.” Hipkins appears to be just male Arden at this moment. Or did he attempt to ridicule the liberal ideology?
